If you’re seeking to reduce debt and regain some semblance of peace in your life, then you need to know that there are many avenues you can take, and that the situation is not nearly as bleak as you might think. Even if your debt is completely out of hand, unmanageable and with no hope of settlement, there are ways out.

Not all these ways might be pleasant, but no one’s going to come toss you in jail for having debt in your life. You might suffer consequences for several years down the road, but if your goal is to get some peace and stability back in your life, then you need to do what you need to do.

The best ways to reduce debt in your life revolve around things like cutting spending, making yourself a sensible budget and sticking to it, and systematically paying down what you owe. These days creditors are willing to listen to nearly any proposal you might offer, as they have more than enough debt of their own, and don’t want yours too!

Don’t fall for these scams that offer to reduce debt by half or more. Many of them are run by the credit card companies themselves in an effort to get some of their money back. Talk directly to your creditors. Don’t take no for an answer.

If you find that you simply need to get out from under debt now, bankruptcy is an option, but not one to be taken lightly. There are consequences for 7-10 years from the date of the bankruptcy, so make that decision carefully. Sometimes, however, it is the best option.

Find and listen to a good financial advisor, someone you trust, and get their opinion as someone with no vested interest in your situation. And remember, the sun will still rise tomorrow!
