You might think that during a global economic downturn, health spas would suffer from loss of custom. You might reckon that people are spending their money only on essentials right now and not on luxuries that they don’t strictly need. You might be surprised to learn then that the International Spa Assosication (ISPA) has suggested recently that health spa are recession proof. This was backed up by the staggering statistic that as a whole, health spa visits increased by 18% last year on the previous year figures. So how and why is this case?
Experts who work for the ISPA have suggested that it is because spas can adapt their offerings relatively quickly in relation to the market that they will survive. What they mean by this is that during times of prosperity, when everyone is feeling good about themselves, spa market themselves as somewhere they can treat themselves. They offer luxury manicures and pampering body wraps, selling the concept of ‘why not? You’ve earned it’.They cannot of course survive on this principle during a downturn however. People would not buy into the idea of treating themselves or spending money of luxuries they do not need. Spas then have to adjust the messages they are giving out.
When people are suffering from stress or financial worries the spas can offer the perfect remedy. A massage or invigorating body treatment is usually the first thing they market, aimed at revitalising the body and repairing the muscles that have endured so much suffering recently. Instead of pampering facials, you can now get a invigorating exfoliating scrub to get rid of all that old bad skin and emerge a brand new butterfly with a fresh outlook on life and a positive attitude towards any problems you may be facing
